Laser Hair Removal Services

If you're looking to remove unwanted hair from any area of your body, laser hair removal is the most long-lasting option you can choose! So, whether you're tired of shaving your legs every few days or don't want to continue getting your underarms sugared, laser hair removal is a safe and effective treatment to reduce hair growth.

Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic treatments and is safe for most areas of the body and every colour of skin. Some of the most popular treatment areas include:

  • Underarms
  • Legs
  • Face (sideburns, chin, upper lip)
  • Arms
  • Bikini line

During our consultation, we will discuss which areas you are looking to receive laser hair removal treatments on. Depending on the amount of hair, how dark and coarse it is, and the size of the area, multiple treatments are generally needed for the full benefit of this service.

How It Works

Laser hair removal is one of the most common forms of cosmetic treatment. Before your appointment, you may have questions about how this treatment works. We want to ensure that you have all the information you need to understand how it works, and that all of your questions are answered.

  • How does it remove hair?

Laser hair removal works by delivering thermal laser energy into the hair follicles. When the laser is applied to the skin, it is attracted to the colour in the hair growth and latches onto the (shaved) hair stubble at the skin surface. The thermal energy of the laser light then travels under the skin and destroys the follicle. The dead follicle will take a few weeks to be pushed out from under the skin and eventually the skin will become smooth and the hair growth reduced.

Lasers are a safe procedure because they can selectively target the hair follicles without damaging the surrounding skin.

Thanks to our advanced technology, treatment sessions are fast and can take as little as 2 minutes or 60 minutes depending on the size of the area.

  • What type of laser is used?

At Julia Skin Beauty, we use the renowned Lutronic Clarity laser. This laser provides fast, comfortable, and--most importantly--incredibly effective laser hair removal treatments.

The Lutronic Clarity is safe for all skin types due its dual wavelengths: Alexandrite and ND Yag.

Alexandrite is excellent for treating light skin and a full range of hair colours, from dirty blonde to dark black. ND Yag is the wavelength of choice for darker skin tones and hair colours. ND Yag can be safely used on even the darkest skin tones for safe and effective hair removal treatment with little to no discomfort.

Alexandrite and ND Yag are considered to be the gold standard for the most safe and effective laser hair removal treatments by industry experts. Both wavelengths have been used for decades for this purpose. Unlike many devices that promise results but don't deliver, this dual wavelength system from Lutronic Clarity ensures that you’ll achieve the best results possible.

There are many devices on the market that use alternative laser wavelengths and that claim to be laser, but actually are not. For example, IPL is commonly used for hair removal, but is not actually laser. In many cases, IPL does not penetrate deeply enough to kill the hair follicle and can also be unsafe for darker skin tones.

The results you receive from a laser hair removal treatment are also somewhat dependent on the skill and experience of the practitioner treating you. At Julia Skin Beauty, you can be assured that you are in the hands of an expert in laser hair removal who has received the best training and the experience to help you achieve the results you desire.

  • What areas can be treated?

All skin that is not within immediate proximity to one's eyes or on a mucous membrane is suitable for laser hair removal treatment. New advancements in lasers and hair removal technology make it a safe and effective way to reduce unwanted hair.

Some of the most popular areas to treat with laser hair removal include:

    • Underarms
    • Legs
    • Face (sideburns, chin, upper lip)
    • Arms
    • Bikini line
    • Back

*This treatment is suitable for any gender, hair type, and skin type.

If you are interested in treating hair from another area of your body, please let us know during your consultation. We are happy to help.

  • Will I have to continue shaving?

As you go through your laser hair treatments, you might be wondering if any hairs will continue to grow from the treated area.

Since it does take multiple sessions to get the full effect of the results, you will have to continue shaving for the time being, but you should notice that the hairs are growing less after each subsequent appointment.

It is important not to shave immediately after having a treatment. Your skin will be irritated or sensitive, so you should wait a few days before shaving the area.

Your esthetician will let you know of any additional instructions or precautions you should take after your appointment, depending on your skin. However, it is important that you only receive laser hair removal treatments with a laser wavelength that is suitable for your skin type.

  • How many treatments will I need?

The area of the body you are treating will determine how many treatments are required and at what interval treatments must be done in to achieve the best results.

Treatments on the arms and legs generally require fewer sessions, while treatments on the face, underarms and bikini generally require more.

Results can vary depending on an individual's genetics, hormones and stage of life since these are all factors that affect hair growth. For this reason, some people will require fewer or more treatments than others.

During your consultation, your esthetician will be able to give you a better idea of how many appointments you can expect for the best results.

As you progress through your treatments, you may find that you require slightly more or less treatments than were originally recommended based on the results you are seeing. This can be discussed with your esthetician and your treatment plan adjusted accordingly.

What To Expect

If you are considering laser hair removal, chances are you have heard a lot about it already. Here are some answers to some of the things you can expect before, during, and after your appointment. Some of these may vary depending on your skin and hair, which we discuss more in-depth in your consultation.

  • Do I need to shave beforehand?

Yes, it is important to shave the area to be treated about 24 hours before your appointment.

Do not pluck or tweeze the area, as this will not allow the laser to target the fair follicles root properly. Shaving maintains hair underneath the skin, which the laser will target.

Shaving beforehand will ensure that your treatment goes smoothly and achieves optimal results each session.

If you have any questions, be sure to ask before your appointment! We are here for you and are happy to answer any questions that may come up between your consultation and your first appointment or subsequent appointments.

  • How long does the appointment take?

The length of your appointment will depend entirely on which area of your body you are receiving the laser hair removal treatment!

For example, the upper lip is a small area and can take less than 10 minutes.

The bikini is a larger area and can take 15 minutes. A full body treatment is the largest area and can take up to 2.5 hours depending on the size of the individual.

In addition to the actual treatment time, we book time for welcoming you into our space, allowing you to change clothes (if applicable), and to prep your skin for the treatment. For this reason, a 10 minute treatment will actually be booked for a 30 minute time slot so that we can be sure we have enough time to provide you with the best care possible.

  • Is it going to hurt?

During treatments, most clients experience minimal to no discomfort. Most clients are surprised by how pain-free our treatments are, although some discomfort is not unexpected. Our laser's controlled cooling mechanism helps to minimize discomfort. Any discomfort that you experience may feel like a cold snapping on your skin that dissipates within seconds after it is done.

Because our laser causes minimal discomfort, topical numbing agents are never requested or required by our clients. If you are concerned about discomfort, let your technician know and they will use settings that are comfortable for you while still maintaining efficacy.

  • What kind of aftercare do I need to do?

Because the skin will be irritated after a laser hair removal session, it's essential to take care of it properly!

After your appointment, avoid the use of irritating skin care ingredients, exfoliation and deoderants on the area(s) that have been treated. Also, apply broad spectrum mineral sunscreens to treatment areas that are regularly exposed to daylight.

Avoiding sun exposure is important for 2 weeks following your treatment, as well as protecting your skin by using a sunscreen on the treated areas daily.

  • How long should I go between appointments?

Generally, it is suitable to wait between four and eight weeks between each laser hair removal session. However, this can vary.

Your esthetician will be able to give you a safe timeframe you can (and should) wait before your next appointment, both for optimal results and to ensure the treated area has enough time to heal and recover from the treatment.

Waiting between appointments also allows new hairs to form that will be treated by the laser in the next session and follows what is recommended by experts to help you achieve permanent results.

We are here to make sure you get the best results possible!

Additional Information

There is a lot of information out there regarding laser hair removal and many questions you may have. Here is some additional information about this type of treatment and other questions you may have. Be sure to ask your esthetician if you have any further questions or concerns about this treatment!

  • Pre-appointment care guidelines

To prepare for your appointment, it's important that you shave the treatment area about 24 hours before your treatment time. It will ensure your best possible results from the procedure.

It is important that when you come to your laser hair removal appointment, your skin is not tanned or darkened by recent sun exposure or self-tanning products. To avoid this, be mindful of how much recent sun exposure you have had and wait at least 1 month after suntanning or applying self-tanners to have laser treatment.

Unless its necessary for your health, avoid the use of Asparin or other blood thinning medications prior to your appointment. Avoid removing your hair in the treatment area with any method other than shaving.

  • Is laser hair removal permanent?

While laser hair removal cannot promise permanent, life-long results, it does a great job of reducing the amount of hair growth in the treated area for a very long time.

Most individuals experience a significant and permanent reduction in hair growth and start seeing results within just one session.

However, this is not to say that all of the hair will grow back. Hair removal from a treated hair follicle is permanent, but some hairs may still develop.

Generally, the hair that does grow back is much lighter and less noticeable than before, and is much more sparse, fine in texture, and easy to deal with.

With the recommended number of sessions for the area you are treating (and at the correct interval), most individuals will experience a 70-90% reduction in hair growth. Results should be maintained with 1-2 sessions per year on the treated area.

  • Can men get laser hair removal done?

    Yes, absolutely!

Laser hair removal is safe and effective for any individual who has hair, regardless of gender or ethnic background.

While factors like gender and ethnic background may affect how many sessions are needed (depending on the area of the body and quality of the hair growth), there is no limit to who can benefit from this procedure.

Coarse and dark hair often responds extremely well to laser treatment, so if you are male and have this type of hair, it's likely that you can expect great results!

  • Avoiding at-home laser hair removal

Since many at-home laser hair removal products are considered cosmetic rather than medical, testing is much less stringent. Therefore long-term effects of at-home machines and products are unknown.

Lasers are powerful and can damage the eyes, which is why medically trained professionals use goggles when providing this type of treatment and care.

There are risks to performing at-home laser hair removal with products that are not medical-grade. The results are generally not as good as what you can get from a licensed esthetician because these products are also not as powerful.

  • Are there any side effects?

Like with any treatment, there are always risks and side effects.

While the side effects of laser hair removal are quite minimal, it's important to take the same care and caution as you would any other treatment.

The most common side effects of laser hair removal are immediately after treatment. They include swelling or sensitivity, redness, and discomfort in the treated area.

These side effects are temporary and typically last for no more than 20 minutes after the treatment. Usually by the time you leave our clinic, they will have fully dissipated.

Other possible side effects that are very unlikely but not impossible include blistering, changes in pigmentation, and scarring. You can avoid these unwanted side effects by following the instructions provided by your esthetician and not doing laser hair removal when you have a suntan.
